While most people don’t really think about men coming for plastic surgery on their chest area, it does happen. Some men want a more sculpted pectoral area. Others may just want to remove stubborn, exercise-resistant fat. And others may be looking to correct a condition known as gynecomastia, a reasonably common condition caused by hormonal imbalance in men. Gynecomastia causes swelling of the male breast tissue. It’s rarely a serious physical or medical problem, but it is an aesthetic concern for those who suffer from the condition.
If you are concerned about gynecomastia, the first place to start is with a medical examination. Our plastic surgery doctor here at the Plastic and Cosmetic Center of South Texas will examine you in order to make sure there are no hormonal problems or masses (rare) that need to be dealt with prior to considering any kind of cosmetic fix. Once any potential health problems have been removed from the equation, it’s time to start talking about what can be done.
For the most part, fixing gynecomastia or doing any kind of cosmetic sculpting on the male chest involves a combination of techniques. This is partially because true gynecomastia causes more than just fatty deposits — actual breast tissue is formed. That tissue must be excised, which requires a different technique than just liposuction. Gynecomastia surgery can generally be done endoscopically, which means it is less invasive and also requires less downtime following the surgery.
The liposuction techniques we can use to create a more pleasing male pectoral physique include feathering liposuction, where fat is removed from several different areas as opposed to just one, and SmartLipo. SmartLipo is a special kind of liposuction that is laser assisted. Also known as laser lipolysis, this technique is less painful than traditional liposuction and is easily performed right in our surgical center. The downtime required afterward is a matter of days as opposed to a matter of weeks, and most people will only require local anesthesia rather than general. Plus, the results are excellent. It can be used by itself or as a complement to traditional liposuction, depending on your individual needs.
