XEOMIN: The BOTOX Alternative

Conveniently located to serve San Antonio and surrounding communities.

Most women and men who are concerned about facial wrinkles and frown lines know about BOTOX. Basically, BOTOX® is injected into the muscles of the face to improve the look of dynamic wrinkles. Not that many people have heard about XEOMIN, though. It’s a virtually new cosmetic treatment that can achieve the same results as BOTOX®, but can be used for other purposes as well.

However, there’s a new Botox alternative, XEOMIN®. It’s a new cosmetic treatment considered in cosmetic and clinical research as one of the most effective BOTOX® alternatives.

What is XEOMIN®?

XEOMIN® is a botulinum toxin type A injectable many plastic surgeons use as a botox alternative.

As one of the most effective botox alternatives, a healthy dose of this smart toxin can temporarily paralyze facial muscles. It reduces the appearance of facial wrinkles, prevents sagging skin, and maintains healthy skin.

Recent results of clinical trials confirm that Xeomin is safe and effective in treating acne scars, forehead wrinkles, and other skin problems. The result of these studies prompted the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) to approve XEOMIN as an anti-aging treatment for fine lines and wrinkles.

XEOMIN® was not primarily used for wrinkle reduction, though. Initially, the FDA approved it as a treatment for cervical dystonia. This neurological movement disorder manifests as abnormal, repetitive movements associated with involuntary muscle contractions.

XEOMIN® is also used to treat a neurological condition called blepharospasm, where involuntary muscle contractions cause excessive blinking and eye closure.

What Makes XEOMIN Effective in Treating Neurological Conditions?

XEOMIN reduces muscle activity by blocking the release of acetylcholine, which is responsible for signaling muscle contractions. The reduced muscle contractions prevent the manifestation of symptoms associated with neurological disorders, such as spasms, stiffness, and muscle weakness.

XEOMIN® for Cosmetic Indications

After the successful treatment of cervical dystonia and blepharospasm, clinical professionals also noted a drastic improvement in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in patients who received XEOMIN injections.

XEOMIN became increasingly popular, and many skin professionals considered it one of the most effective botox alternatives.

Thus, in 2011, the FDA approved XEOMIN® to reduce moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows.

The Science Behind Botox and XEOMIN

As an FDA-approved cosmetic treatment, XEOMIN contains botulinum toxin type A. This means that, like Botox, it has the same neurotoxins derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum.

This active ingredient works by blocking nerve signals that stimulate muscle contractions. The temporary blockage of these nerve impulses leads to a more youthful and smoother appearance.

Comparison Between XEOMIN and Botox

However, while these two cosmetic treatments have many similarities, some factors set XEOMIN apart from Botox and other cosmetic procedures.

How they are manufactured

One of the main differences between XEOMIN and Botox is how each is manufactured.

Botox is produced and distributed by Allergan. The manufacturing process includes combining the botulinum toxin protein with other proteins to form a complex that contains the toxin and other accessory proteins.

The accessory proteins found in Botox are known to stimulate an immune response. Some patients may experience reduced effectiveness of the toxin over time.

Merz Pharmaceuticals manufacture XEOMIN. This smart toxin undergoes a different purification process, where the botulinum toxin protein is purified and isolated from other proteins.

XEOMIN earned the byname, ‘naked botulinum toxin, for containing just the active toxin, stripped of other complex proteins.

Eliminating complex protein from XEOMIN reduces treatment resistance, making it a better option for people looking for the best botox alternatives.

Length of Effects

Board Certified Dermatologist Chey Ranasinghe explained that the results of XEOMIN last longer compared to the length of the effect of Botox. You can expect to enjoy the effect of XEOMIN for up to six months and up to around three to four months for Botox.

Speed of Results

The effect of XEOMIN is evident within 2 to 3 days after treatment. In contrast, Botox may take up to 7 days to take full effect.

XEOMIN for Your Cosmetic Concerns

You can achieve younger-looking skin with XEOMIN. As one of the best alternatives to botox, this toxin is an effective treatment for many cosmetic concerns, such as:

Frown Lines. Are you looking to reduce the appearance of glabellar lines but dread the idea of undergoing plastic surgery? XEOMIN is an effective treatment for frown lines.

When injected into the muscles, XEOMIN reduces muscle activities. The reduced muscle activities diminish frown lines within 2 to 3 days after treatment.

Crows Feet. The crows’ feet refer to the fine lines that form from the outer corner of your eyes, especially when you smile or squint.

Note that as we age, our bodies experienced decrease collagen production. The decreased level of collagen, combined with other factors, including sun exposure, repeated facial expressions, and lack of sleep, contributed to the appearance of fine lines around the eyes.

Excessive Sweating. People suffering from excessive sweating may find a respite with XEOMIN. This toxin prevents excessive sweating by blocking nerve signals to the sweat glands.

Many people suffering from excessive seating visit cosmetic clinics for a single XEOMIN treatment that can relieve them from the problem for many months.

What to Expect From Treatment

The treatment process involves a precise and less minimally invasive procedure. Below are things you can expect before and after the treatment:

Consultation

Consultation is necessary to determine whether XEOMIN is the right option for you.

During the consultation, the practitioner would want to know your goals for seeking this cosmetic procedure. This is also the time to address your concerns and questions about the treatment.

You can also expect your practitioner to provide specific pre-treatment guidelines, such as:

  • avoiding certain medications, such as fish oil, aspirin, vitamin E, and anti-inflammatories;
  • refraining from alcohol 24 hours before treatment to reduce the risk of bruising;
  • informing your practitioner if you experience any health changes before the treatment.

Preparation

On the day of treatment, the practitioner will clean the target area. While anesthesia is unnecessary, your practitioner may apply topical anesthesia to numb your skin and minimize discomfort.

Injection

Your provider will inject a small dose of XEOMIN into the targeted muscles with a fine needle. The amount and number of injections may vary, as each patient requires a unique treatment plan.

Recovery

Typically, XEOMIN cosmetic treatments require little downtime. While you can expect redness and swelling at the injection site, you can return to work and resume your regular activities right after treatment.

Results

You will notice the full benefits of XEOMIN after a few days. They should last up to 6 months, though you may arrange a follow-up consultation within a few months to maintain your desired look.

Potential Risks and Side-effects

XEOMIN, as with other cosmetic procedures, is not without risks. Potential examples of adverse effects are:

  • pain, redness, or swelling at the local injection site
  • headache
  • dry mouth
  • asthma symptoms
  • dizziness
  • muscle weakness

These reactions are typically moderate and last for only a few days. However, discussing any concerns you may have with your provider before pushing through with the treatment is important.

It is rare for patients to experience severe reactions to XEOMIN. However, remember to contact your doctor immediately if you have any severe reactions arising from the treatment.

Why Choose XEOMIN as a Botox Alternative?

XEOMIN is an appealing alternative to Botox for many patients due to its distinct formulation and potentially fewer adverse effects. Below are reasons to consider XEOMIN for your cosmetic needs:

Reduced risks of protein resistance. Because XEOMIN doesn’t contain accessory proteins, patients may be less likely to become resistant to the medication. This makes it an excellent alternative for people who have noticed a decline in Botox’s effectiveness.

Effectiveness. XEOMIN provides outcomes similar to Botox. It can successfully lower the visibility of fine lines and wrinkles for a smoother, younger-looking appearance.

Fewer Allergic Reactions. XEOMIN has a clear benefit in this area. Dr. Ranasinghe states, “With Xeomin’s purified formula, the potential for allergic reactions is even further reduced compared to traditional Botox.” This distinct quality of Xeomin makes it an excellent option for people worried about possible allergic reactions, providing an added level of assurance.

FDA approved. XEOMIN has received FDA approval to treat moderate to severe frown lines, indicating that it satisfies stringent safety and efficacy requirements.

Maximizing the Effect of XEOMIN: Daily Regimens and Skin Care

While Xeomin is primarily known for its efficacy in reducing the appearance of wrinkles, you can enhance its benefits with a well-thought-out skincare regimen.

Remember, your skin health extends beyond any cosmetic procedure and adopting the following daily,y regimen can enhance the results of XEOMIN treatment:

Exfoliation: The Foundation of Healthy Skin Tone

The first step to maximize the effect of Xeomin involves regular exfoliation.

Exfoliating regularly helps eliminate dead skin cells that can make your skin appear dull. Using an exfoliating cleanser ensures that the surface of your skin is fresh and ready to absorb the skincare products you apply, enabling them to work more effectively.

However, remember that over-exfoliation may lead to skin irritation, so aim for a gentle exfoliation 1-2 times per week.

Hyaluronic Acid: Your Hydrating Hero

Following exfoliation, using a hyaluronic acid product can be a game-changer.

When applied topically, hyaluronic acid helps keep the skin hydrated. It improves skin texture and elasticity that can complement the wrinkle-smoothing effect of Xeomin. A well-hydrated skin sets the stage for a more youthful, radiant complexion.

Anti-Aging Creams: A Potent Ally

Incorporating a high-quality anti-aging cream into your routine can help maximize the efficacy of Xeomin treatment.

Anti-aging creams, particularly those containing active ingredients like retinol or peptides, can support the skin’s repair processes and stimulate collagen production.

Over time, this can lead to improved skin firmness and reduced appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots, complementing the effects of Xeomin.

Remember, consistency is key in skincare. Sticking with your regimen and allowing time for products to work is essential.
