Most women and men who are concerned about facial wrinkles and frown lines know about BOTOX®. Basically, BOTOX® is injected into the muscles of the face to improve the look of dynamic wrinkles. Not that many people have heard about XEOMIN®, though. It’s a virtually new cosmetic treatment that can achieve the same results as BOTOX®, but can be used for other purposes as well.
What is XEOMIN®?
XEOMIN® is a cosmetic product that is meant to affect the function of muscles, partially relaxing them for a time. This is why it’s been approved by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows.
XEOMIN® has other uses, though. It was primarily approved by the FDA as a treatment option for cervical dystonia. This is a condition in which abnormal and uncontrollable muscle contractions cause the sufferer to exhibit abnormal and repetitive slow movements and eccentric or strange dispositions. This is because of the effect it has on the neck muscles in particular.
XEOMIN® has also been used to treat a neurological condition called blepharospasm. This condition is characterized by an uncontrollable reflex causing the eyelids to close. It has also successfully been used to treat a condition in which both eyes do not point in the same direction. These are uncontrollable eye muscle contractions, and XEOMIN® has successfully been used to treat them to some degree.
XEOMIN® for Cosmetic Indications
The FDA recently approved XEOMIN® for the reduction of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows as a result of the successful treatments of blepharospasm and cervical dystonia. Some see this as a substitute for BOTOX® because it can be used to improve the appearance of many of the same skin conditions.
There are a few ways XEOMIN® can be viewed as better than BOTOX®. XEOMIN® is very simple to ship and distribute because it does not need to be refrigerated like BOTOX® does. It also has no additives, which means that there is less of a chance of complications like bodily rejection and allergic reactions. XEOMIN® treatments last for as long as BOTOX® treatments; about three to six months.
