When it comes to chronic back pain, exercises, a better mattress, massage therapy and better posture can really help you find relief. However, sometimes it is our own physiology that is causing the discomfort. In the case of large-breasted women, the size and weight of the breasts can cause pain in the back, shoulders and neck.
If you’ve tried plenty of conservative measures to treat your back pain and still haven’t found a solution, you may want to consider a breast reduction.
Deciding If You’re a Good Candidate
The first step is to ascertain whether or not a breast reduction is a good choice for you. Your overall health, weight and frame size must be taken into account, in addition to the size, shape and health of your breasts.
In general, healthy women can tolerate reduction rather well. If you smoke cigarettes, you’ll need to commit to quitting before and after surgery for several months to allow your body to heal as best it can. If you’re overweight, you may need to lose weight so surgery and the anesthesia will be safe for you.
The Breast Reduction Process
While there are several different surgical techniques used for reduction, the process follows the same general steps for everyone. The surgery is done while you are under general anesthesia.
This means you’ll sleep through the entire procedure and won’t feel or see a thing. The surgeon will carefully trim away any excess tissue or skin before closing the incisions. Treatment time may vary.
Recovering at Home
If all goes well, you’re usually permitted to go home after surgery or early the next day. You’ll likely want a family member or close friend to stay with you for a few days and assist you with everyday routines like brushing your hair, bathing and changing your clothes.
You’ll also need someone to take you to your follow-up appointment. Within a number of weeks, you will likely be back to your normal life and wearing normal lingerie again. Most patients can resume their normal sex lives in about six weeks, too.
