We are all bound to get wrinkles at some point in our lives. They are caused by several factors, such as the sun damage, scarring, aging, genetics and enlarged pores. What causes our skin damage is the decrease in the amount of collagen and elastin fibers, which makes up most of our dermis. These fibers form a network that provides elasticity, support and structure.
There are several procedures to help reduce the appearance of wrinkles and rough skin, but one of the most popular is microdermabrasion. It is used to reduce all of the factors that were previously mentioned. Reducing all of these factors will give you a more youthful appearance.
Microdermabrasion removes the epidermis, the top layer of the skin, by using fine crystals. The procedure lasts from 30 to 45 minutes and is relatively painless, so no anesthesia is needed. Before the procedure, it is best to treat your skin with products containing alpha hydroxy acid or retinoic acid. Alpha hydroxy acids and retinoic acid both help in removing dead skin cells, treating acne and helping with acne scars. It is good to use for individuals of all skin types.
After the procedure, patients usually experience some redness for the first few hours but you are able to return to your regular routine right after the treatment. For the first few days your skin may look as if you have a slight sunburn and will be very sensitive to the sun. It is recommended that you use sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to protect your skin and allow it to heal.
Afterwards you will notice that your skin looks more youthful. At first you may receive treatments one to every two weeks but, over time will decrease to once a month and later twice a year.
