Mentoplasty is a form of plastic surgery that involves a reshaping of the chin area. There is a variety of reasons this procedure might be needed by our patients.
A mentoplasty can be used to reshape a chin that does not fit the dimensions of the rest of the facial features. Abnormalities that result from improper bone growth around the chin region is another reason. Sometimes, it’s also used in the gender transition process to make the chin appear more male or feminine as it applies to the individual’s needs. Whatever the reason is for a mentoplasty, it can deliver life-changing results that improve the appearances, profiles and self-confidence of our patients.
There are two general types of mentoplasty surgery procedures we perform: chin augmentation and chin reduction.
Chin Augmentation
We perform our chin augmentation surgery by placing an implant that is designed and shaped to hug the chin, giving a very natural appearance. The implant is made from non-reactive substances like silicone, which is the most popular, although other similar substances can be used to suit our patients’ needs. This solid silicone is not the same as the kind used in breast implant surgeries. The kind we use for chin augmentation has been used for over fifty years in the medical field and is one of the safest to use.
Doctor Jeneby places the implants either under the chin or inside the mouth. Either way, it takes cutting through a few layers of skin to have enough room to place the implant properly. Throughout this process, careful attention is paid to not sever the two most important nerves of the chin. After enough room is accessed and cleaned with antiseptic fluid, the implant is inserted and fitted perfectly. The incision is then closed using a method that produces almost unnoticeable scarring to the area.
Chin Reduction
If a chin reduction procedure is necessary, it’s accomplished by making an incision either under the chin or inside the mouth, as with chin augmentation. The difference is that our surgeons will have to remove the bone in the chin area. The same cleaning procedure and incision closing techniques are used after the successful surgery.
Precautions after Surgery
Since our patients are given medication to reduce the discomfort of the operation, it’s always best for them to arrange to be driven home after the surgery. Although patients can leave immediately after the surgery, it will take about ten days on average for them to return to work or otherwise continue with their normal routines.
