Cellulite: What Causes It?

To some degree, everyone has cellulite on their bodies, even people with low body fat percentages.

So what causes cellulite? And how do you get rid of it?

The common misconception surrounding cellulite is that it’s caused by body fat. This isn’t actually true.

Some of the factors that can contribute to the development of cellulite on your body, include:

  • Hormones
  • Age
  • Genetics
  • Diet
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Smoking

Women tend to develop cellulite more than men because women typically experience more hormonal changes throughout their lives and have denser fat distribution than men.

While higher levels of body fat can make cellulite more noticeable, body fat is not, in fact, the underlying cause.

Your skin is connected to your muscles via fibrous connective cords. These cords are quite tough and structured to help hold your body together.

Fat cells lie in between your muscles and your skin. As you accumulate fat, your fat pushes up against your skin. Conversely, the fibrous cords pull down on your skin. The result is either an uneven surface or dimpling.

Types of Cellulite

There are three types of cellulite. Knowing what type of cellulite you have is key to understanding how to treat it effectively.

Soft Cellulite

Also known as flaccid cellulite due to its association with saggy skin, soft cellulite is typically found in areas of your body where you accumulate fat, such as your stomach, hips, buttocks, legs, and arms.

Soft cellulite is most visible when you’re lying down and relaxing, not when you’re standing up.

This type of cellulite isn’t painful, and it’s not a medical condition. However, in some cases, soft cellulite may cause your skin to feel rather gelatinous.

Soft cellulite is typically a result of either weight gain or reduced muscle tone. So the most effective treatment for soft cellulite is usually diet and exercise to lose weight and gain muscle tone.

Hard Cellulite

Hard cellulite affects everyone, no matter how slim and toned you are. Hard cellulite is characterized by blemishes and depressions on the thighs, glutes, and hips. In severe cases, hard cellulite can be painful.

Preventing hard cellulite is impossible because some people are genetically prone to developing it, regardless of their weight.

Hard cellulite is more difficult to treat than soft cellulite. Cellfina is a notable excision-based treatment option for hard cellulite reduction.

Edematous Cellulite

Edematous cellulite is also known as poor circulation cellulite. This is the most severe type of cellulite, and it is typically a sign of a medical issue. It is also usually quite painful.

If you have edematous cellulite, you should seek medical help to discuss treatment options.

Grades of Cellulite

Cellulite is divided into four different grades of severity.

At grade 0, cellulite isn’t necessarily visible, but there are still changes to the structure of your skin taking place beneath the surface.

Grade 1 cellulite is when your skin doesn’t appear dimpled on its own, but when you pinch it, it takes on the texture of an orange peel.

You may have grade 2 cellulite when the lumps and bumps in your skin are visible on their own.

Grade 3 cellulite is the most severe and occurs when cellulite areas are hard, painful, and visible at all times.

Cellfina for Cellulite Reduction

Cellfina is a non-surgical and minimally invasive procedure. It mainly targets cellulite on your buttocks and thighs.

This procedure works based on a technology called subcision. Subcision uses a device the size of a needle to help treat the fibrous cords under your skin.

During your Cellfina procedure, we will move the subcision device across the treatment area in a fanning motion to help release the cords under your skin. The result is that the dimples of cellulite bounce back, creating a smoother appearance.

Cellfina for Collagen Production

Another benefit of Cellfina is its collagen production capabilities.

Collagen is a protein that helps keep your skin healthy, strong, and volumized in appearance.

Loss of collagen could be a contributing factor to visible cellulite. As you age, your body doesn’t produce as much collagen as it used to. This makes your skin prone to appearing saggy, thin, and wrinkled.

As Cellfina creates micro-wounds in the fibrous cords under your skin, your body reacts by producing more collagen in order to accelerate wound healing.

By stimulating collagen production, Cellfina can help address saggy, wrinkled skin. Increased collagen production can help make your skin stronger and thicker, making cellulite less visible.

How Quickly Will You See Results?

Patients who receive Cellfina treatments typically start seeing results within three days post-procedure.

After a few months, our patients see a substantial reduction of visible cellulite. For many, it may almost completely disappear.

Cellfina was designed to eliminate the appearance of cellulite for a minimum of five years. And it has years of proven success.

However, it’s virtually impossible to completely eliminate the appearance of cellulite for good. Your body is dynamic and constantly changing, and since cellulite is a result of some of those changes, it may eventually return to some degree.
