But what about the other 2 percent, or those women who may experience problems with their implants, despite a previously high rate of satisfaction? That is when it may be time for breast implant revision surgery.
Breast implant revision surgery is exactly what is sounds like — a surgery that revises, corrects, or improves on a previous breast augmentation surgery. This surgery most commonly involves removing and replacing the implants, though some women will choose to do a removal and go without implants at all. It can be performed for purely cosmetic reasons, such as wanting to change the size of the implants or to correct problems from the original surgery. Common problems include:
- Saline implants that have deflated or been otherwise damaged
- Silicone implants that are leaking (most often detected via x-ray or MRI)
- Implants have moved or shifted
- Scar tissue around the implant has caused a tightening condition known as capsular contracture
- There have been changes in breast tissue due to weight fluctuation or other changes that cause skin stretching
Some women opt for this type of surgery several years after a successful augmentation due to changes that time has caused, such as a loss in breast symmetry.
